After wandering around the ruins we took the train to Mainz (about 1 hr). I was in Mainz in 2008 for Karneval (post here), but that was more about the party than the city...so I was excited to come back and see the sights. We dropped our luggage off and walked through the Altstadt (old city), enjoying the sunshine. We went by the huge Dom (cathedral) and had a piece of cake at the Dom Cafe, watching the traffic on the market square in front of the cathedral. Lots of people walking, biking, children playing... We stopped at a tea shop in one of the pedestrians shopping streets and picked out some fruit tea blends. The sales clerk was super friendly and had us "sniff" a few kinds so we could pick something we liked. She measured it out into 50g bags and labelled it for us. After walking around a bit we found a "Weinhaus" where we had dinner (and a few glasses of Riesling and even Riesling Sekt - German sparkling wine).
